The city of Jakarta is sinking under the weight of uncontrolled population growth, environmental degradation and flooding. By contrast, Indonesia’s new capital - Nusantara - is designed to be a safe, modern, smart, sustainable and green capital city, in pristine and biodiverse Borneo. It is designed with 8 key principles in mind which include promoting a circular and low carbon economy to unity in diversity. The new capital has the potential to be a model for sustainable urban transformation in Southeast Asia or if the detractors are proven correct, a catastrophic failure.
